A password change bug was fixed. Also, the doorway to the Monmouth potion shop has been repaired. Sorry for the downtime. Have fun with the game!

The quests have been repaired and are now available. Since the objective of the quests were to obtain skill books, if you already have completed those skills you will not see them. Not all skills require quests. All magic systems do. Most weapon systems require them for Levels 4 and 5. Skill books not available in quests are still available in Academy shops. All Skill books obtainable through quests are no longer available in shops. Also included in this update are fixes for negative ep in combat (artificial level bug), as well as a couple new (small) areas for exploration, additional talk tree data, and minor cosmetic changes.

Due to technical difficulties which resulted in yet another power loss at our server during our planned equipment move, we've been forced to revert all player data back to 3:00am on 08/21/98. This problem was a direct result of mishandling of our server equipment by our ISP (Exodus) and is being dealt with. Due to the critical type of hardware failure that this caused, we were down for more than 30 hours trying to repair the damage. All should be running normally again. Sorry for the problems.
All:
The backups are still being processed. They are taking a good, long time to complete. I'm going home to take a meal break, but I'll be back on to check progress and keep you informed. It will still be some time, based on what I'm seeing here. I wish I could be more exact.

UPDATE...

All:
The infrastructure for 3.x is now in place. That means that you can connect and get a down time message. I'm currently beginning the chore of restoring all of the character and house data from our 3:00am pacific time backups. Our latest backups are from 8/21/98 at 3:00am. All players will experience a "warp" back to that time.
This restoration will take a couple of hours (minimum). I'm still hoping for 7:00 pm, but it may be later.

Down time...

All:
Since I'm very busy fixing this heap of mess, I'll keep this short: The Realm is down until later today. My estimate for getting it back up is at 7:00pm PST. What caused the downtime? Incompetence caused it. What can be done to fix the incompetence? We could stop using incompetent ISPs that mishandle our machines at critical times. That action is reserved for future action. Rest assured that our backups are complete and normal gaming will be restored ASAP.

We have fixed a nasty bug which allowed certain folks to crash others in certain areas of the world. If you were getting the "Error 99" problem last night or this morning, you should be good to go now. Sorry for the problems.

Doorways should now be functioning normally. Some arcane code crept into the system from a prior update and should now be cleared. Have fun :)

We were made aware of a problem with the server that allowed certain players to crash the game repeatedly. The problem had to do with a special log file that we keep to track people who use known security holes in the game. Basically, we have a bit of code on the server that verifys the profession you choose for your character on startup. If it is an illegal profession (like you would get if you hacked away) the server logs your name and ignores your character creation request. Well, the part of the code that logged the attempt had an exploitable problem that caused the server to crash under some circumstances. The problem has been fixed, but sadly we are unable to isolate the people responsible. Thanks for your patience during this problem.

At 2:00am PST on 7/2/98 our ISP experienced a power failure that corrupted a great deal of data on the server. Due to technical problems, our daily backups were not complete and we have spent the last couple of days reconstructing the missing data.
Due to this problem, many of you that had converted your old 30-day account to a 12-month account may find that your account has reverted back to a 30-day account again. Don't panic. All you need to do is to visit http://www.realmserver.com/30day.html and re-convert your 30-day account.
If you have misplaced your purchased login name and password, your account will still be active for 30-days. Simply mail customerservice@realmserver.com and explain that you misplaced your information. To make the processing of lost information as smooth as possible, please include the following information in your mail:
1) The name of all characters on the account in question.
2) The first time you used the account (approximated if needed).
We will begin processing this information on Monday 7/6/98.
All magic mail has been lost due to these problems as well.
